Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare: What You Need to Know

Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare: What You Need to Know

So you’ve undergone scalp micropigmentation (SMP) and you’re wondering how you should care for your new treatment. While SMP is designed to be a permanent hair loss solution, you need to follow the right aftercare procedures to ensure the pigment lasts as long as possible. In this article, we’ll be discussing everything you need to know about caring for your scalp micropigmentation treatment and help make it last for years to come.

Pre-caring for your scalp before an SMP treatment

Preparing yourself prior to a scalp micropigmentation treatment can go a long way towards achieving better, long-lasting results. Consider these pre-care instructions prior to your SMP treatment.

  • Avoid taking any pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen before the treatment. If you take such medications on a regular basis, consult your physician first and ask them if it’s okay to stop taking pain relievers for 48 hours before each session.

  • Do not consume alcohol or caffeine a day before the procedure as these beverages can worsen the pain.

  • Moisturise your scalp, preferably with a water-based moisturiser. This is especially important if you suffer from dry skin as skin flaking can remove some of the pigments deposited after the first session.

  • Identify the problem areas in your scalp (i.e. thinning hair, bald spots, or receding hairline) and take photos for reference. You can show the photos to the SMP technician for a more accurate assessment on how you want the treatment to be done.

  • Do your own research and familiarise yourself on how scalp micropigmentation is done. The more you know about the procedure, the easier you can adjust your expectations and be more relaxed come treatment day.

Short-term care after your SMP treatment

Once you’ve successfully completed each session of your scalp micropigmentation treatment, you should follow these short-term care instructions to allow the pigments to settle in. Keep in mind that during this period, you want to be as gentle as possible with your scalp. Your SMP technician will provide a detailed instruction on how to care for your SMP treatment and these instructions are usually as follows:

  • Avoid soaking your head in water for about 3-5 days. Also, avoid any activities that cause you to sweat profusely. Excessive sweat can make the pigments look blotchy and ruin the appearance of your treatment.

  • Minimise sun exposure to your scalp as much as possible. The sun’s UV rays can break down the pigments and cause premature fading. Ideally, you should wear a scalp or use an umbrella whenever you’re exposed under the sun.

  • You may notice a bit of swelling the first few days after the treatment. This is completely normal and should not be a cause of concern. For temporary relief, place a small towel over your head and put an ice bag on top.

  • Do not scrub, scratch, or comb your scalp. If it becomes too itchy, use your fingertips instead of your nails to avoid taking off some of the pigments.

  • You can then wash your scalp on the 5th day with a mild shampoo

Long-term care for your SMP treatment

Scalp micropigmentation is intended to be a permanent solution to your hair loss problems. Provided that you implement these long-term care instructions, you’ll be able to enjoy a fuller, thicker head of hair for years to come. To get the most out of your SMP treatment, make sure to follow these tips:

  • Keep your scalp moisturised each day. Use moisturiser right after taking a shower and before going to bed. This helps minimise dry scalp and prevent the flaking of the pigments.

  • Apply sunscreen to your scalp with an SPF of 30-50 to preserve the colour of the pigments and prevent them from fading.
  • Refrain from using hair care products that contain alcohol in them. Alcohol can be absorbed by your scalp and make the pigments look blotchy, so it’s best to avoid them as much as possible.

  • Exfoliate your scalp at least once a week to remove dead skin cells and maintain the appearance of the pigments.

  • Consult your SMP technician for touch-ups regarding your treatment. Just like tattoos, scalp micropigmentation fades slowly over time. Do not worry though as this fading phenomenon takes 5 years or more before needing a touch-up.

  • With a touch-up, you can customise your look by sharpening the edges of your hairline or changing its colour depending on your personal preferences.

With so many hair loss solutions out there, scalp micropigmentation has proven to be one of the most effective treatments around. The results are very realistic and it delivers incredible value for money. However, you do need to look after your treatment to ensure consistent results. With these aftercare tips, you’ll be able to enjoy a fuller head of hair that will not only restore your hairline, but also your confidence as well.
